Acronym GOLF – Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden
The origin of the name golf is very interesting. The first Scotsmen who pioneered the game of golf gave the game it’s name by creating an acronym. The word GOLF is actually an acronym for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. A horrid idea in today’s western world that is finally grasping the concept of human rights.
In these early days of the game it was not strange due to the many different “men only” clubs. Women could not vote, and were quite literally second class citizens. As a matter of fact, some the most prestigious golf courses still have these ancient and ridiculous rules in place.
A perfect example is the golf course in Georgia built by the famous Bobby Jones – the Augusta National Golf Club (home of the also famous Masters golf tournament). Still, at the time of this writing, the Augusta National Golf Course is a mens-only membership and will not allow females to join as members.
It’s hard to believe that this kind of gender-based exclusivity is still a reality in the new century, and the fight in on with feminists to legally force the Augusta to allow female membership.
