Broil King Gas Barbecue
North Americans love to barbecue and with so many products on the market it is easy to find one that meets your needs. There are simple straight forward barbecues that have one burner and two shelves, ideal for small back yards or decks. There are larger models complete with extra side burners, and rear burners for gourmet chef’s who love to barbecue in the back yard. There are fixed models and barbecues on wheels , they come with folding side shelves and multiple temperature controls.
Over the years these barbecues functionally have remain the same, however the finish has evolved from a dull black aluminum construction to one of stainless steel finishes which looks more professional and cleaner looking. Our Broil King gas barbecue that we choose has two burner controls, one for each side and two shelves one on each side of the main housing.
We chose this model because the shelves fold down for storage and the cover is stainless steel. It also has wheels so that we can easily move the barbecue from place to place around our back yard patio. The other reason we like it so much is that the propane tank is enclosed below the heating elements with stainless steel doors on the front. Very nice and very professional.
Barbecue’s On Sale
Fortunately for us we had an existing barbecue which although it was on it’s last legs was still functional. We took our time deciding which new barbecue we were going to purchase and then we decided to wait until they went on sale. We almost lost the one we wanted, because they sold out quickly when the were put on sale. We were checking every day at Home Depot, and then missed a couple of days. Sure enough that was the day they went on sale. We managed to get the last one for $100 off the regular price!
Getting it Home
These barbecues come in big boxes and most will not fit in the average small car trunk or back seat. I was faced with renting a Home Depot van for $30 or taking it out of the box and placing all of the individual parts inside the trunk and back seat. Worked like a charm and I saved $30!
Assembly of the Broil King Barbecue
Assembly is pretty straight forward, however there are a few areas that you need to pay attention to. Essentially you really want to make sure that the gas connections are done properly so that no gas escapes in the wrong places and causing fires.
Once you have assembled the barbecue and connected the propane tank, there is a step that absolutely cannot skip. That step is leak testing! Follow the steps in the manual for leak testing of the propane connection at the propane tanks as well as around the venturi tubes. The manual will give you step by step directions which you should follow.
Also each time you refill the propane tank and reconnect it, repeat the leak testing sequence again to avoid any possible leaks.
Almost Ready for Cooking on the Broil King Barbecue
Once everything is connected, you need to start the Broil King Barbecue and allow it to heat up and burn off any oil that is on the barbecue from the factory. Let the barbecue burn for at least 20 minutes before cooking anything on it. You may notice a slight smell of burning oil , however this is just what you want.
Broil King Barbecue Operation
Many people have developed their own cooking methods over the years, however with every new barbecue , there is a bit of experimentation required. The temperature settings may be different and the barbecue may be hotter in some areas vs. others. The manual will give you some hints regarding what temperatures to expect at various settings.
Cooking the perfect steak is really a matter of taste, but it is never better than on an out door barbecue. Our Broil King Barbecue manual came with some suggested cooking times for steaks based on the thickness of the steak and how well done you want the steak to be cooked.
We have been following these suggestions and our steaks have been absolutely mouth watering perfect. For example we like our steaks medium cooked, with just a little bit of pink in the center. A one inch thick steak cooked to medium should be cooked for 3 minutes, then turned 180 degrees to get that cross hatched look on the meat, cooked for another 3 minutes and then flipped over. Repeat the process of cooking for 3 minutes, turning 180 degrees and your done after 3 more minutes. Cooking time is a total of 12 minutes for a perfect steak.
Cooking time for a rare steak is seven minutes, eight minutes for medium/rare and 14 minutes for medium well. Don’t forget the baked potato which can also be done on the barbecue, wrapped in tin foil.
Some Maintenance Requirements for our Broil King Barbecue
Maintenance is pretty simple. After every use, run the barbecue for a few minutes to burn off any grease that has accumulated on the porcelain coated grill. The grill can be cleaned with soap and water. Each time you use the barbecue you should coat the gill lightly with cooking oil.
Our Broil King Barbecue came with the patented Fav-R-Wave which sits between the flame and the grill. This prevents direct heat from the flames overheating the food or burning it. It also distributes the heat so that there is a more uniform heat throughout the grill.
If the residue builds up on the Flav-R-Wave, remove the grills and the Flav-R-Wave and scrape it with a barbecue brush. Keep all areas of the barbecue clean and free of any grease or other materials. If a cover came with your Broil King Barbecue, you should really use this cover to protect the barbecue from the elements.
You may have to replace the burner elements from time to time, They are easy to replace and most barbecue stores will carry replacement burners.
